This place might have the best beef dish I have ever had in my life. Came here with 4 friends on a Saturday evening, and we were seated immediately. The inside is crowded with storage boxes and takeout materials that you have to scoot around to get to your table, so you know it's a good Chinese restaurant. The walls are decorated with the awards and Food Network appearances this restaurant has had. There's a restroom that's right across from the kitchen so you'll have to move out of the way constantly if there's a line. We got the Fang's Crispy Beef (We think? Explanation down below), the Famous House Noodles with Black Sesame Sauce, the Chow Mein, and the Famous Nanking Sesame Chicken. Fang's Crispy Beef: 10/5, We weren't going to oder the beef at first but our waitress asked/told us, "You're ordering the beef, right?" so we did. Absolutely listen to your waitress -- this was the most incredible dish we ordered there and maybe the best dish I've had in Chinatown. The beef melts in your mouth and the glaze is so delicious and sweet to complement it. To give a sense of how good this was, we got a second order of this beef and got another order to go to eat later. The confusion I had with this dish was that it's listed on the menu as being served with bok choy and we had green beans. Definitely not complaining though, the green beans were the good, thicker kind that were cooked to perfection and still garlicky, not homogeneous to the beef flavor with its glaze. Other tables I saw had the same beef with bok choy, so really unsure why we got green beans (in all three orders of the dish). We ordered in Cantonese however, so maybe they did it especially for us. Famous House Noodles with Black Sesame Sauce: 4/5, good dish! I've never seen black sesame sauce on noodles before, so these were unique to me. It's not overwhelmingly sesame and balanced well with the meat. Chow Mein: 4/5, delightfully saucy and the noodles are thick and not uniform, good signs of handmade noodles. I'm a big fan of southern style Chinese food, so I love the thicker noodles that had a great chewy texture. Famous Nanking Sesame Chicken: 5/5, chicken maintained a good crispy texture despite the sauce of the dish. Love the sweet potato pairing that grounded the dish! My second favorite dish that we ordered. This was an incredible meal -- immensely clear why this is an SF classic. This may be my new go-to place to take visitors when looking for Chinese food. The food came out fast and was cooked to perfection. I loved it here and will definitely be back (for 3 more orders of that beef)!

Good food, fast service. Loved the onion cakes, dry braised green beans and veggie dumplings. The fried eggplant was also good. Service was spotty- servers hurried to deliver food but never checked about how the meal was or if we needed anything.

This was OMG delicious! Recommended by an Uber driver who said that most food in China town is frozen food heated up each day. The pork belly had lots of flavor and the fried rice was tasty too. Not like anything I've ever had. The place is a little cramped when it's busy. We were sitting arm and arm with another table. The menu can be overwhelming, but we took our time even though there was an older lady rushing us. Everyone else in the place was super sweet though.

So surprised by the low rating here. I first came to house of Nanking about 10 years ago and I was pleasantly surprised they're still here. We came on a Thursday night around 8pm and waited about 6 minutes to be seated outside. They have plastic wrap so it wasn't cold at all. Service was incredibly quick and they have a great system here so everyone helps everyone. We went with the tried and trues: hot and sour with shrimp, pot stickers, crispy beef, and sesame chicken. Did not disappoint

I came to the House of Nanking, for dinner and quickly joined the line that was already outside the door. The inside was packed and there is also outside seating. But it was a chilly night, so I was willing to wait to go inside. Since I was dining solo, they called me in quick and put me on a communal table. There are many enticing choices on the menu and I opted for a simple but famous dish: the house noodles, which are hand pulled with black sesame sauce. I asked for it with shrimp. The bowl arrived at my table piping hot, with aroma and optics. The broth had body and was intensely flavorful. The noodles were the star of the meal. They had fresh texture, perfect thickness and satisfying chew. Every bite and slurp was divine. Beautiful restaurant with so much of character and interesting people, both local and international. Service was brisk, timely and well delivered.

Got some good dinner at this Chinatown institution friendly to American tastebuds but still good. House Of Nanking has a lot of the typical sounding Chinese restaurant options. It has rice topped with various proteins and vegetables. A lot more authentic flavors make it better. The prices are okay for the big portions. Chill place to eat outdoors on the sidewalk in front. It's got a few tables plus some enclosed ones. They recommend you let them choose the order for you. Give them an idea what you want to get. Then let them choose something. It's about $13 for an entree. This doesn't include any rice though. Add a few more bucks to get it. We got a few of the vegetarian ones. Has a few good choices. I got the Fried Tofu In Peanut Sauce. This didn't look like that much but after eating this it was. Hearty tofu pieces in a thick sauce made from peanut butter. There's an entree of tofu made with black bean sauce if wanting another good option. Has many things for many preferences of Chinese food. It's not extremely authentic but there's a lot on the menu. There's a pretty big section of things for vegans and vegetarians.

We got a recommendation from our hotel to try this place out and it did not disappoint. The food knocked my socks off, I'm talking 5 stars can we go again good. The meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Coming from me, that's saying a lot. We sat on the sidewalk and enjoyed every single morsel of food delivered to our table piping hot. The problem was the owner kind of hovered at our table while we were eating. It was a little strange but could be taken as him being passionate about his restaurant. I would let him sit In my lap though if I had to, just to enjoy this food again. I highly recommend but maybe get it to go if possible.
